Zimbabwe

Please continue to support Christian Aid's appeal to help the thousands of Zimbabweans who are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

Christian Aid launched the appeal last year in response to the 5.5 million who depended on food aid during the ‘hunger season’.

Thanks to the generous support shown we were able to provide thousands of families with seeds, tools and agricultural training before the planting season began in October.

This has ensured more plentiful harvests in April - food to feed thousands of people all year and enabling them to earn the money they need to pay for essential medical care.

But we still need your continued support. Around 2.5 million people needed food aid earlier this year as Zimbabweans continue to be caught in a cycle of food shortages.  Drought, a ruined infrastructure and an economy in collapse mean people simply can’t grow enough food to survive.

But if we act now, we can help avert the crisis for thousands next year too.

Hunger and disease

Humanitarian agencies continue to warn that unless the food insecurity issue is addressed, further outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, anthrax, TB and malaria will claim lives.

In 2008, more than 4,000 people died of cholera in Zimbabwe – more than half of all children who died from the disease were malnourished. Last year the numbers affected by cholera were low, but the threat remains.

Your donations will count

The change in the political situation in Zimbabwe has given us a window of opportunity in which to work. We do not know how long the reduction in violence and intimidation will last, with the next round of elections predicted for next year, we must act now to build peoples' resilience.

We are also using this opportunity to help people build a stronger society - and to stand up to a government that has ravaged their country.

Because we don't just want to reduce hunger. We want poverty over once and for all. And your contribution to this appeal will help us do just that.

Be assured, we will only work through our trusted local partners to deliver support with money raised from this appeal.

Thank you from Zimbabwe

Below, Violet Moyo from Christian Aid partner ZimPro sends a short message of thanks to everyone who supported appeal.

Violet explains what ZimPro – one of a group of Christian Aid partners working on food security – was able to do thanks to your generous support.  Please help us to do more.
