Pray with us

A prayer for the Iraq Crisis.

Crying God,

We join our voices with those from around the globe,
crying out for the plight of the persecuted minorities in Iraq.

We join our hearts with those displaced from their homes, yet again,
crying out for the fear, the terror and the madness to end.

We join our hope with those who wait for rescue on the Shangal Mountains,
crying out for food, for water and for the kingdom of heaven to break into this hell.

We join our faith with the faith of all who pray,
Crying out for the slaughter of innocence to end.

We join our tears with yours,
Crying out for us all to know and live by the things that make for peace.

So help us, God,
Amen.

Points for intercession

  • Pray for an effective response from NGOs and the international community to bring humanitarian assistance to the people on Shangal Mountains as soon as possible, there are reports of them having to eat leaves from the trees in order to survive.

  • Pray for the protection of all people, including persecuted religious minorities such as the Yazidis and Christians – hundreds of thousands of whom have fled in fear of their lives.

  • Pray for those who had previously fled to camps in search of refuge and are once again on the move as the fighting gets closer.

  • Pray for Christian Aid’s long-term partners in Iraq, who have already been responding to the ongoing displacement of communities, have also begun to provide vital humanitarian relief to communities displaced in recent days.

  • Pray for Christian Aid partner, REACH, one of our focus countries for Christian Aid Week this year, they have already distributed non-food items, such as hygiene kits, to families who have just arrived in the northern city of Sulaimaniyah.

  • Pray for them as they scale up their efforts in the coming days and weeks to respond to the growing and desperate crisis that is sweeping across parts of the country.

  • Pray for a generous response to this crisis appeal so the needs of our partners to be met as they continue to support displaced communities in Sinjar, Dohuk, Kirkuk, Karbala and Sulaimaniyah.

Bible passage

I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage:
Wait for the Lord!
Psalm 27, 13-14

A prayer for Iraq

Based on Psalm 46

God of refuge and strength,
We pray for those who are terrified, living in fear in Iraq.
May you be a very present help in their trouble.
Very present through the touch of Christian Aid partners on the ground.
Very present through the response of the international community.
Very present through the support of those who watch prayerfully on.
May those who are left with nothing
know that they are not forgotten.
May they once again be able to fear less.

God of refuge and strength,
We pray for all those escaping fighting, seeking safety in northern Iraq.
Those half a million people who are now on the move and
those 220,000 Syrian refugees already there.
May you be a very present help in their trouble.
Help through the provision of resources so needs are met.
Help through food, water, hygiene and sanitation kits.
Help so this ‘crisis on top of a crisis’ would not reach breaking point.
May those who are left with nothing
Know that they are not forgotten.
May they once again be able to fear less.

God of refuge and strength,
Who makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
We pray that the bows of this conflict would be broken
That the spears of retaliation and rage would be shattered.
That the uproar of nations would be quietened
And that the illusion of earthly kingdoms totter.
Would that we would all be still and know that you are God.
Without whom we are left with nothing
With whom none of us are forgotten.
May we all find refuge and strength in you to fear less.
