Africa food crisis appeal

Millions of people across Africa are facing food shortages and malnutrition and it's the most vulnerable communities that suffer the worst. You can help us respond to this crisis by making a donation.

Which countries need urgent aid?

Ethiopia The failure of seasonal rains earlier in the year has left millions without food. This, combined with a poor July harvest, has left around 11 million people facing extreme hunger.

Somalia In a country that has suffered years of conflict, 2.6 million people – 35% of the population – need humanitarian assistance.

Kenya Food insecurity is widespread and 1.2 million people are in need of food assistance and the whole population is affected by rising food prices.

Burkina Faso The world’s second poorest and least developed country, according UNDP, cannot cope with the sudden rise in global food prices. Already 39% of population are experiencing chronic malnutrition and 19% are experiencing acute malnutrition.

Democratic Republic of Congo In one of the poorest countries in the world, the whole population faces food insecurity. Rising food costs have caused the prices of staples, such as maize and rice, to double since December last year.

Malawi With almost two-thirds of the population living on less than $2 a day, large numbers of people are likely to need food aid. Christian Aid is carrying out an assessment to ensure it can respond where the need is greatest.
