How is Christian Aid responding?
As the global food crisis hits the poorest worst, millions of people in Africa are facing starvation and food insecurity. Christian Aid partners are on the ground providing help to those most in need.
In Ethiopia, Christian Aid partners SOS Sahel and Centre for Development Initiatives, are distributing seeds to ensure subsequent harvests are not affected by current food shortages.
And across Africa, our ongoing support to partners working with communities to improve their agricultural productivity will be increasingly important as the changing climate brings new challenges for domestic production.
However, the huge scale of the crisis will require funds, which is why we have launched our appeal.
What’s behind the crisis?
The poorest people in developing countries are the always the first to suffer from soaring food prices and climate change.
Abiy Hailu, Christian Aid’s Ethiopia country manager, points out that even before the food crisis there were 8 million people in Ethiopia unable to afford adequate nutrition on a regular basis.
Crop failure, climate change, soaring food costs means that the vulnerable can no longer cope.
With millions of people across Africa facing extreme hunger, this is a crisis the world cannot ignore.
And though Africa is bearing the brunt of this crisis, Christian Aid has warned that the food crisis is a global problem.
