El Salvador floods and mudslides: Christian Aid responds
In November 2009, Christian Aid sent £20,000 to support emergency response work in flood-stricken El Salvador, providing help to over 320 families in six communities.
Floods and mudslides destroyed vital bridges and roads and left almost 14,000 people homeless.
Our local partner, Aprodenhi, was able to act quickly in the aftermath of the floods providing emergency food, medicines, mattresses and blankets to those who took refuge in temporary shelters.
Aprodenhi's work also supported communities to restore their agricultural productivity by replanting crops destroyed by the floods.
Disaster preparedness
Floods and mudslides are a repeated, annual threat during El Salvador's rainy season. Our partners are hopeful that our disaster preparedness work in La Paz has helped to protect people’s lives, homes and crops.
Early warning systems led to effective evacuations, while riverside flood defences, drainage systems and flood-resistant crops like rice and malanga should help to minimise crop losses, and so protect families' food supply for the months ahead.
Help us respond when disaster strikes by donating to our Emergencies fund, using the online donation box to the top right of this page.
