Northern Kenya: how drought affects women

September 2011

Mercy and the Christian Community Services team, a Christian Aid partner, have worked tirelessly since May to support communities affected by drought in rural areas of Marsabit, northern Kenya.

As Mercy explains in the film below, she is particularly concerned for women living in the drought-affected areas as she believes they often suffer the most.

Women face very difficult choices as water sources are scarce. Many are mothers caring for their children in these extremely difficult circumstances. They are responsible for cooking, fetching water, cleaning, collecting firewood, and washing and caring for the weaker and younger goats that cannot walk to find water and pasture.

The women are forced to save water for essentials like drinking and cooking, and for many they have not been able to wash themselves or their children properly for months.

Thanks to your donations, CCS continues to provide a vital lifeline for these communities and is committed to ensuring that they receive all that they need.

But the need is still great and many people are now praying for the rains which are expected in October.
