East Africa Food Crisis: three months on

October 2011

Three months after famine was declared in Somalia, the food crisis remains critical across the East and Horn of Africa.

The UN estimates that more than 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and 750,000 are at risk of death in Somalia alone.

To meet this immediate need Christian Aid is scaling up its activities in Somalia and South Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia.

As regional emergency manager Maurice Onyango explains, ‘It is essential that this crisis is not forgotten, although the rains are anticipated in most parts of the region in October and November, for many it will get worse before it gets better. Our partners are skilled at working in these challenging areas and we must support them to ensure lives are saved’.

Our most recent work in Mogadishu and southern Somalia is providing essential food for more than 2,500 families.

Through local partners ECS Sudra and HARD in South Sudan we are working with up to 1,500 displaced and vulnerable families to provide:

• Emergency food supplies
• Access to clean drinking water
• Emergency shelter and household goods
• Essential hygiene kits.

As rains are predicted across the region, partners are preparing communities. They are ensuring that their life-saving activities are not affected by flash floods and cholera that the rains could bring.
