Christian Aid Week 11-17 May

Last year Christian Aid Week raised £15 million. It set the standard, and we love a challenge. In 2008, you can help us do even better.

Ways you can top last year range from holding a Quizaid night, to getting sponsored to dress up like a gorilla and abseil off the Forth Bridge (OK, we made that one up). Or you could pledge to do something else like recycling your old mobile or buying your dad a Father’s Day goat.

You can also find out more about the way we spend the money you give. Which brings us to the easiest way to take part – making a donation.

Zimbabwe impasse Zimbabwe impasse
As Zimbabwe’s post-election crisis enters its second month, reports of violence and intimidation are mounting.

And with calls for an end to the impasse growing around the globe, church leaders in Zimbabwe have spoken out, warning of impending genocide should the situation deteriorate any further.

Read the statement from our partner, the Zimbabwean Council of Churches, as well as firsthand accounts from a country in a state of paralysis.

World food crisis World food crisis
In recent weeks we’ve seen food riots in Haiti and Egypt, while forecasters predict a steep increase in global food prices over the coming months.

For the world’s poor, who would be first to feel the impact of soaring prices, it’s a perilous situation – and one the West has helped nurture, as Christian Aid policy manager Alex Cobham explains.

What’s behind the crisis?

Keep on running Keep on running
Feeling fit? Why not build up a sweat for Christian Aid? Thirty runners raised a tidy £50k for Christian Aid at this year’s London Marathon. We were worn out just watching them.

Now we’re bracing ourselves for more vicarious exhaustion this autumn. We’ve more than 100 places on the BUPA Great North Run in Tyneside. One of them’s got your name on it. Don’t be scared – this one’s ‘only’ 13 miles…

E ON at Kingsnorth Stop E.ON’s power plan
Power giant E.ON says it takes climate change seriously. Yet it’s also planning to build a coal-fired power station in Kingsnorth, Kent, which will emit more carbon dioxide than 30 developing countries combined every year.

For us the two things don’t match up. That’s why we’re pressing E.ON to scrap its Kingsnorth plans.

Christian Aid will be at this year’s Royal Show (Stoneleigh, Warks, 3-6 July) to highlight the effects of climate change on farmers in Africa.

Britain’s major agricultural show attracts 140,000 people every year. We will be there to demonstrate our adaptation work with farmers in Burkina Faso – and you can join us! Plus, if you book via the Christian Aid website, we will get 10% of the ticket price.
