Where it all comes from

Some people give £1, some give £1 million. Either way, giving is a way of putting your money where your mouth is, and this year our supporters made their views quite clear. They want change.

In 2006/07 we reached our highest ever annual income of £93.3 million/€138.4 million – and once again you were the driving force. A massive £70.2 million/€103.6 million – more than 75 per cent of our income – came directly from the public in Britain and Ireland. This financial year, people donated to help people caught in the crossfire in Lebanon and Gaza, they set up direct debits to give thousands of people the chance to work their way out of poverty, and left legacies to safeguard the future.

Volunteer army

Our extraordinary army of 300,000 stalwart volunteers took to the streets yet again for Christian Aid Week in May – collecting door to door in their neighbourhoods, organising events in their churches, putting on book fairs or cycling around London to raise funds for development and justice. Together, they raised an amazing £14.1 million/€20.9 million.

And although our board of trustees restricts our income from governments to no more than 30 per cent – so that we never compromise our independence – we are grateful to governments for their essential support.

The British government’s Department for International Development (DFID) gave us a generous £5 million/€7.4 million for work to tackle HIV in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Irish government, through its overseas development agency Irish Aid, has agreed a generous programme of €17 million/£12 million for Christian Aid over the next five years for projects in Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, Colombia, Sierra Leone, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and Rwanda. USAID gave us US$5 million for HIV projects in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria. Click here for more details.

The EU continue to support our work, giving us £1 million/€1.5 million for a water project in Ethiopia and £2 million/€3 million for development programmes in Latin America. The European Community's Humanitarian Aid department has given us £1 million/€1.5 million for humanitarian relief work in countries including Mozambique and Afghanistan.

We received £1.2 million in 2006/07 from trusts. One such trust, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, enabled us to fund the pioneering work of sex workers in halting the spread of HIV in south India. Thanks also to the Co-op Bank, the eco-company Greener Solutions and the ever-generous water company AquAid for their donations. Read about how to become one of our corporate sponsors here.
