How our volunteers are making a difference
Jane Aggleton and Christine Kearns – Database Volunteers in Cardiff
Jane and Chris with Head of Wales, Huw Thomas
How they got involved/ reasons for volunteering
Christine saw an advertisement for the voluntary post in her local Church Newsletter. “I had recently retired and my job had involved doing all the tasks the post required so I felt I had the right experience and skills to offer. It seemed too good a chance to miss working for such a worthwhile charity.”
Jane wanted to volunteer in her spare time and found the volunteer role for Christian Aid which suited her perfectly. “It is an organisation that I have supported for many years and the task of working on their database suited my skills very well. An added bonus is that the office is walking distance from home.”
What they enjoy about their role
Christine enjoys the type of work and is glad she is able to use her skills and experience without the pressure of a full time job. She says the office is very pleasant to work in with congenial colleagues. Also she gets involved in the social side of the office – lunches, Christmas meal etc. “I just like the routine of having a job and coming to work two mornings a week with no problems if I need time off”.
Jane enjoys working in the office for a day and a half a week with the friendly people there. “The work that I am doing suits me very well and I like the fact that I have a distinct project that I can see through to fulfilment. “
Jane and Christine make a huge contribution to the team by keeping our data as up to date as possible. Jane has spent over a year, ensuring we’ve got details of as many churches in Wales on our system as possible and now is ensuring we’ve got current information on the system about all the schools in Wales. As well as adding new organisations and updating existing contact information, Jane finds lots of duplicate records on the system so is consolidating them.
Christine logs the information about our supporters – what resources they order, what activities they have been involved in with us, has helped track income - updating records and helping us ensure we reach the right people in the right way.
