Alternative Tax Awards

Presenting the IASB with their Golden PalmCongratulations to the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), the latest recipient of a prestigious Christian Aid Alternative Tax Award.

We launched the awards in May to ‘recognise’ outstanding achievements in the field of tax dodging – and to highlight the $160bn that this drains from poor-country coffers every year.

The IASB earned its Golden Palm trophy after being adjudged the body with the greatest potential for tax reform.

Find out how you can encourage the board and its key members, the Big Four accounting firms, to deliver on this potential.

And the winners are...

Christian Aid held its inaugural Alternative Tax Awards ceremony on Thursday, 21 May outside the Hilton Park Lane in London.

While the accountancy industry celebrated its achievements in tax-bill-minimisation, we held our own awards ceremony outside.

Winners included Barclays for tax haven enthusiast of the year.

We questioned tax professionals as they stepped out of their taxis about the fact that poor countries are losing $160 million a year through tax dodging. The majority of people we spoke to were positive about our campaign.

We attracted lots of attention dressed in black tie outfits and waving placards saying ‘tax dodging costs lives’. The official photographer for the tax event said that we were the best dressed demo he’d ever seen! We were even ‘papped’ by a couple of paparazzi from big pictures photo agency.

Amid the high heels and glamour, our awards highlighted the sober reality that poor countries are losing out on money which could help them pay for schools and hospitals and other public services.

You can help us change this

Global accounting rules have to change - and the Big Four auditing firms, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers, can help make it happen.
